Environmental Health: Urban Pollution, Industry and Communities
Abstract
Urban and industrial environments concentrate pollution sources alongside populations that may be especially vulnerable to their health effects. This chapter examines evidence linking urban and industrial pollution to human health outcomes, with emphasis on the mechanisms, exposure pathways, and population-level factors that shape risk. It reviews major urban pollutant classes, including ambient particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen dioxide, volatile organic compounds, heavy metals in soil and dust, and environmental noise, and relates these exposures to respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, renal, developmental, and other health outcomes. The chapter also examines industrial fenceline communities and the environmental-justice literature, showing how historical land-use decisions, discriminatory zoning, facility siting, housing conditions, and unequal access to environmental protection can produce persistent disparities in exposure. Methodological advances, including community-based participatory research, low-cost sensor networks, mobile monitoring, satellite remote sensing, and cumulative-impact assessment, are evaluated as tools for identifying local pollution hotspots and supporting community protection. Case studies from Houston and West Dallas, Texas, illustrate how monitoring, community health surveys, and participatory research can strengthen the evidence base for regulatory action. The chapter concludes that environmental health equity is an empirical and policy challenge central to urban environmental science, providing scientific context for Chapter 26 on environmental law and Chapter 29 on education, public engagement, and the sustainability transition.
